Beer Review, Double, Enjoy By, IPA, Poem, Stone

I lost a good ale while walking around the house the other day. I’m not yet desperate enough to suck spilled beer out of the carpet, so I’ve chosen to memorialize that lost soul in poem form.

I think that I shall never hear
a song sad as a wasted beer.

A beer whose frothy contents spilled
and left my cravings yet unfulfilled.

A beer I longed for all the day.
to wash my pointless cares away.

A beer that filled my glass with flair
but tumbled as I missed a stair.

Upon the floor its suds have lain
and cause me to cry out in pain.

Sobriety, us boozers fear
is best tamed with an ice cold beer.

Stone Enjoy By…

Appearance: Striking. Crystal clear golderrod mirred only by the incessant tiny bubbles that move with passion. A thick creamy head that sticks to your upper lip in a way that you only see in the movies. The head sticks hard to the sides of the glass, not lacing so much as slowly oozing down and covering everything. This is a marvel

Smell: Big hops; like walking through a meadow after a soft rain, the sun beaming down on your face as it slowly bakes the grass and fills the air with scents of a perfect Spring day. Like getting flowers when it’s not even a special occasion.

Taste: Oddly tame, I expected to be stabbed in the back of the throat with hops and bitterness. Medium-bodied and incredibly drinkable.

A nice bit of citrus cuts through everything and keeps you refreshed and wanting more. It finishes mush sweeter than I’d expect for this kind of beer. Mango or something tropical. It totally caught me off guard. For the most part it tastes like it smells with is damn near perfect.

Overall: Buy, buy, buy, buy, buy, buy, buy! This was a revelation. It was something that has stuck with me since I actually tasted the beer three weeks ago. That I’m not drinking it now is slightly depressing. 95/100.

Up Next: It really doesn’t matter right now. Probably an IPA.

Beer Review #65: Great Lakes Chillwave Double IPA

Chillwave, Great Lakes, IPA, Pitches, TV

In trying to branch out and stop wasting my time writing beer reviews that are only read by my mom, I’ve started working on some pitches for TV shows. Here’s what I’ve got so far:

Manhunt: A real life version of “The Most Dangerous Game“, but with rubber bullets.

Ghost Prostitute: Gloria Horowitz runs a brothel in Tel Aviv. On one fateful night, she’s out of girls and one of her biggest clients is in town. She decided that she’ll take one for the team and do one last job herself.

Mid-coitus, her partner, who weighs 347 pounds, has a heart attack and dies; collapsing on top of her and cutting off her air supply. Because she’s a strict hasidic Jew, she can only have sex through a hole in a sheet. She dies in this sheet, and per ghost rules, roams the world wearing the last thing she was wearing. High jinks ensue as she tries desperately to make it in a world full of smarmy, 21st century ghosts as a stereotypical ghost in a sheet.

The Shot of a Lifetime: This is a reality show where six people in dire straights compete to win a million dollars. The catch? They have to play Russian Roulette on live television. We do everything in our power to find the people with the saddest stories so that America feels a deep connection to the eventual victim, who wins nothing. Only people that pull the trigger and win get cash.

LadyCop: Mark Ladycop is a seasonal worker at Honey Baked Ham, but his real dream is to be a beat cop in the NYPD. One day, while operating the slicer, he slips and receives a deep cut. Because he has a rare blood type, there is only one possible blood donor in the surrounding area: a woman that works as chief technician at the nuclear power plant. Transfused with her radioactive blood, once a month Mark LadyCop undergoes a transformation; growing a sweet pair of tits and legs that go on forever.

As a woman, Mark is able to finally join the police force due to quotas for minority hiring. He catches the attention of an other female officer and uses what he learns as a woman to woo her as a man. Unfortunately, Mark’s time as a woman also syncs up with his period and he is forced to spend most of his transformation with terrible cramps. Most of the show is about him learning how tampons work. Can a ham man makes it as lady justice? Find out this Fall on Fox!

A new month is soon upon us. If you want a question answered in the monthly reader e-mail segment just shoot a message to IgnoreThis@boozeandothernonsense.com, or literally anything that ends with “@boozeandothernonsense.com”. Also there’s Facebook and Twitter for fun updates and lazy comedy bits. Here’s a beer review.

Great Lakes Chillwave

Great Lakes Chillwave

Appearance: Deep, clear amber; I you found a mosquito trapped in this you could re-build Jurassic park. The head is a good half-inch of thick, off-white craters. Carbonation is beyond energetic at first, but then slows to something reasonable. As I drink, the lacing is doing a gorgeous dance down the side of my glass.

Smell: Huge amounts of fruit. Apricot, plum, nectarine, mango, grapefruit, peach. Fresh hops and wild flowers. It’s like walking through a farmer’s market.

Taste: All of those great smells come through spectacularly. The body is on the weak side of medium and the carbonation keeps things fresh. All that sweet fruit is well tempered by a striking aftertaste of hops and a dewy lawn that’s being blasted by the noon sun. The aftertaste will stick with you for a while.

Overall: Holy hell this was a treat. 94/100. I tend to talk down my higher reviews, but this was beyond criticism. Find it, buy it. It was an honor to be in the same room as this beer, let alone trickling it into my stomach. My liver may finally forgive me.

Revolution Anti-Hero

Revolution Anti-Hero

Appearance: Wow, just wow. All IPAs should aspire to this. The head is strong, pillowy, and perfectly white. The beer’s nut brown color is a perfect complement to the gentle carbonation and alluring haziness. This is a real beer; something that you’d never be ashamed to be seen with

Smell: Big grapefruit up front. After that, it’s like walking through a forest in the fall. Maybe some hard, tropical fruit and some sort of herb.

Taste: Never in a million years has something so bitter been so good. If one is looking for a lesson in balance then I’ve found your teacher.

A strong, punch-to-the-face of bitterness gives way to a citrus and malt sweetness. The hops coat the mouth and stay on the tongue long after drinking. The aroma has carried over in a great, and refreshing, way. All of this is carried by a respectable, medium body that is more than capable of supporting that strong taste while keeping the beer clean and refreshing.

Overall: I couldn’t be much happier with this beer. I hate giving out scores above 90, but to give this less than a solid 90/100 would be a slight to Dionysus. This is everything that I want out of an IPA. After having so many stinkers, this was like soaking up the rays on a tropical beach. And, as always, I’m a fool for graphic design and any microbrew in a can so it gets some bonus points. It only lost out a little because the grapefruit can be a bit much at times.

Up Next: Something to summon an early Spring. A nice hefeweizen perhaps.

Beer Review #40: Left Hand Brewing Co. 400 Pound Monkey

400 Pound Monkey, IPA, Left Hand

I believe that this review was requested by a reader. If you have recommendations for a review post them in the comments in the beer recommendation section.

Appearance: At first look I am shocked by how cloudy this beer is. It’s quite appealing and matches well with the beautifully thick white head that does an expert job of coating my glass. I love it. The beer itself is slightly darker than straw.

Smell: It’s very tame and balanced. Lovely floral notes I get walking through a meadow in early Spring; after a night of rain, the morning sun is slowly bringing life to the plants. That’s just me though.

Taste: Shockingly refreshing! As soon as this hits the tongue I am instantly in paradise. The smell carries through wonderfully in the taste; the floral notes just dance on the palate in a balanced, but strong way. As for tastes, I get a delightful citrus flavor, mild hoppiness, and a sweet caramel-like finish.

Overall: This was a fun beer to drink. 84/100. I could put away a six pack of this in a matter of minutes on a nice spring day. I’ve been neglecting IPAs on this blog for awhile. We’re going to be going down this road a lot more in the future. Can’t have people calling me a porter snob. My mom called me one the other day. Bad Times.

Beer Review #27: Magic Hat HI.P.A.

Beer Review, IPA, Magic Hat

Appearance: A dull pale brown, a tad cloudy with a good bit of carbonation. It looks a bit drab though. Not sure why really. The head is quite nice. Slightly off-white and long lasting. That color though…

Smell: Hops. Lots of hops. I get a little bit of citrus maybe, but mostly hops.

Taste: That smell was very deceptive because this beer is shockingly mild, not overly hoppy at all. I definitely get grapefruit and hops, but the taste falls flat. The mouthfeel is very thin. This beer has adequately confused me. I liked the citrus notes though.

Overall: 72/100. I’ve had worse, but if I had to rush out for an IPA this would not be what I wanted. This beer was all over the place. I liked the smell, but the color was unappealing and the taste really left a lot to be desired.

Beer Review, Commodore Perry, Great Lakes, IPA

Appearance: I’m first transfixed by this thick creamy head. It is quite substantial. The beer is copper colored and a tad cloudy. It’s quite pretty.

Smell: Very floral. It’s like walking out into your garden on a nice sunny day.

Taste: Sweet at first, but it quickly becomes distinctly hoppy. There is a bit of bitterness left on the tongue afterwards. I get an odd honey note as well. Pleasant in a way though.

Overall: This beer was peculiar in a good way. 72/100. This is definitely not an everyday beer, but could really turn a bright, sunny day on the porch into something special.

21st Amendment, Beer Review, IPA

Appearance: Not what I expected. The label suggests that this is a black IPA and it is quite black. Very black; rivaling even some of the darkest porters that I have encountered. It does allow some light through though. The head is mocha colored, thick, and lasting. (Please no “That’s what she said.”

Smell: Fruity and sweet. Strong malt smell for an IPA. There’s also the typical citrus notes of an ale.

Taste: Quite subtle. slightly malty at first with a bitter aftertaste. The hops don’t really carry through in that pleasant way that one would expect from an IPA.

Overall: This was easily on of the strangest beers that I have ever had. It seems to have so many different personalities and I think that may have hurt it. This beer is best described as confusing. 65/100

Beer Review, Columbus Brewing, IPA

Appearance: Cloudy and raw. The color, light brown to orange, is just a few shades darker than the University of Texas’ football jerseys. The head seems nice and strong.

Smell: Big and bold floral aromas. There’s also a citrus presence. This is one of the most aromatic beers that I’ve smelled.

Taste: This may sound weird, but I instantly get grapefruit. It’s quite odd, but I like it a lot. The hops leave a pleasant floral aftertaste.

Overall: This was shockingly good. I didn’t expect a lot based on the graphic design on the bottle, but I guess that’s why we have that whole books and covers proverb. This will make its way into my regular rotation. Huge recommend. 87/100
