Beer Review #36: Anchor Porter

Anchor, Beer Review, Orgasm, Porter

Appearance: Dark. Perfectly dark. One of the darkest porters that I have ever encountered;  no light penetrates it in my glass. The head is a very thick creamy tan that beautifully envelopes the glass.

Smell: Elegant, sweet, succinct. The smell has the anticipated malt character of a porter along with a very slight amount of fruit. Dear god yes!

Taste: The malt comes off as very lightly roasted given the dark color of the beer. I get a rich chocolate and the fruit from the smell carries through a bit. It is medium bodied and comes with a shockingly delicate bitterness that vanishes instantly with the hoppy aftertaste.

Overall: There is nothing that I can say about this beer that hasn’t already been said about a perfect winter day. This was cozy, familiar, dark, serene and left me wanting to curl up with a blanket in front of a fire. I bought a six pack of this and dread drinking the last one. 95/100

Up Next: I don’t care.

Beer Review, Budweiser, Project 12

Appearance: Very clear, very bubbly. It has a dark pumpkin like color and it has a medium bodied head that keeps around for quite some time. The clarity is almost startling. It seems otherworldly.

Smell: Very sweet. Lots of maltiness and breadiness, but not much else.

Taste: Quite crisp with a medium body. Not as bad as I thought. Actually a bit pleasant. The actual flavors are identical to the smell and the crisp finish kills any aftertaste. This is best described as a nicer version of regular Budweiser.

Overall: This beer had a great mouthfeel and interesting look, but kind of fell flat after that. It was probably my favorite of project 12, but I doubt that I’d ever order this anywhere. 63/100. This was the only bearable beer of the group. Glad to be done.

Up Next: Anchor Porter (I’m giddy)

Defending Tradition

Mirror Lake, OSU

Every year, as an Ohio State student, one receives an e-mail urging them to not jump into Mirror Lake, one of the most awesome traditions ever. The e-mail, which rightfully encourages safety, includes the lines: “Ohio State has many wonderful traditions. The Mirror Lake jump is not one of them. And I strongly encourage you not to participate.”

I decided to reply to that e-mail with the following:

First of all big fan, I love what you’re doing. Unfortunately you’ve missed the mark here. I love safety, it’s one of my few passions (along with lepidoptery and artisanal cheeses), and I also understand that the university has a liability issue to deal with, but saying the the Mirror Lake jump isn’t one of the wonderful traditions of our fine university is an affront to the entire idea of tradition.

Traditions often make little sense, have confusing histories, and can be outright coo coo bananas crazy, but that’s what makes the so endearing. You’re carrying out some action because it’s a part of the identity you’ve elected to take on. If I were English I’d sing “God Save the Queen” before a soccer game and as connoisseur of artisanal cheese I don my traditional snake skin cheese gloves before most meals. These things become a part of what makes the identity relevant. It’s why we, society, works so hard to preserve tradition.

Pass on liability and educate the student on safety, but don’t insult us. It’s  stupid and uncomfortable and downright loony, but it’s also a time of camaraderie, pride, significance and thrill. Don’t sully that. Don’t take that away from anyone. Some of the best have occurred during the week of this game and I hope that every student after me gets a chance to create similar memories. I hope to hear my children tell me about their first jump as OSU freshman. Most importantly, I hope that everyone is safe on Tuesday and you can rest assured that everyone is taking precautions. One of the great things about traditions is that when we share them we are quick to point out the hazards and our tactics for avoiding them. A tribal hunter will ask for advice on his first hunt and underage students will ask me how to get duct tape off of their lower legs without pulling our too much hair. It’s goofy, but it’s ours.

Beer Review #34: Budweiser

American Lager, Beer Review, Budweiser

Appearance: Quite pale yellow and very clear. The head is white, very thin, and fades away quickly; leaving a slight white ring around the top of the glass.

Smell: A bit of malt. Nothing else.

Taste: That tiny malty smell carries through, but there isn’t much else to it. A slight bitter aftertaste is more welcome than it ought to be, likely because of the lack of any other tastes.

Overall: Meh. 35/100.

Up Next: That Project 12 that I promised earlier.

Amber Lager, Beer Review, Project 12

Appearance: Copper colored with lots of carbonation. The head pours thick and white and has a lot of lasting power. This beer looks great, but I have my reservations.

Smell: Malt and some other sweet notes. The bottle suggests vanilla and I am inclined to  agree.

Taste: Not what I expected and in a bad way. There is an overwhelming metallic taste that is nearly impossible to ignore. The aftertaste is slightly sweet, but masked by the offensive metal taste.

Overall: 39/100. Dear god avoid this. This was an enjoyable drinking experience until I actually drank it. I’m legitimately upset that a company is proud of this.

Up Next: The last of Project Twelve. Ughh. I hope it’s good.

Beer Review, Budweiser, Project 12

Appearance: Incredibly clear with a golden straw color. It pours with a white head that fades thin and remains for quite some time.

Smell: Very weird. I don’t know if I’ve ever encountered anything like this. Lots and lots of fruit, plums possibly. There are other sweet notes and a slight hoppiness. All around, a strange smell.

Taste: Very crisp, but there really isn’t much of a taste at all. Honestly, I get nothing, There may be a bit of malt in the aftertaste, but I think that’s my imagination. Also, the smell has completely gone away as well.

Overall: Apparently this beer immediately begins changing its chemical makeup as soon as it’s poured into a glass. I just took another drink and now it just tastes bad. I’d prefer regular Bud to this. 43/100.

Up Next: Another one of these weird beers…

Beer Review, Stout, Thirsty Dog

Appearance: Black as oil, opaque. This is a dark, dark beer. If it’s just very dark brown there is no way of telling. The head is a rich caramel color that nicely lines the glass.

Smell: Crazy sweet maltiness. I also get hot chocolate.

Taste: This is a very full bodied beer. It coats the entire mouth and leaves a lasting impression. The malt smell was quite deceptive as this beer does not have particularly powerful malty taste, but it is there. I also get a light coffee. A slight bitterness in the aftertaste leaves a pleasing sensation.

Overall: 81/100. This was a good beer, but nothing particularly wowed me. I didn’t hate it though. I still gave it a pretty high rating because the appearance and smell were phenomenal.

Up Next: The Budweiser thing that I seem to have lied about.

American Wheat, Beer Review, Magic Hat

We have a Facebook page now. Like us won’t you? https://www.facebook.com/BoozeAndOtherNonsense

Appearance: Very pale straw colored like an American-style lager. The head has some staying power an leaves large bubbles on the top of the glass. Quite cloudy as well.

Smell: A shockingly brilliant balance of hops and malt. It’s not a very strong smell, but when you get your nose in the glass it’s really quite pleasant.

Taste: Well. That was not at all what I expected. This is bitter to a fault. I’m disappointed because the smell was so inviting. I get a slight citrus, slight hops, slight wheat aftertaste. This beer is quite crisp and the aftertaste does not last long.

Overall: I really had higher hopes, but this beer only managed a 72/100 for me. If the smell wasn’t as great as it was this score could be significantly lower. A bit of a let down.

Up Next: Apparently Anheuser-Busch is up to some tricks and they’re trying their hand at craft brews. I have three on deck starting with the Budweiser Batch No. 63118. This is going to get weird.

Historical Figures, Trolling Craigslist

We have a Facebook page now. Like us won’t you? Booze and Other Nonsense on Facebook!

I asked people who in history they’d like to sleep with and why. One guy did a great job, but the rest are good too. I think I may have been to vague in my original ad.

I was a bit worried about this one, but it worked out in the end. Most of the respondents ignored the instructions and the ones that actually listed a historical figure typically put some obvious modern actress or model. I got a few decent responses though and here they are. Also, this one starts off pretty mild, but gets very weird very fast about halfway through. Enjoy and share dammit! This one is short and sweet.
