Ale, Beer Reviews, Belhaven

Appearance: Cloudy and rust colored with maybe the creamiest and longest lasting head that I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The look of a great hearty rustic beer. Beautiful lacing!

Smell: A gentle malt aroma blends together with a slight note of caramel.

Taste: I expected a bit of thicker mouth-feel, but it is still a bit robust. The malt is instantaneous followed by fresh bread and dry fruit.

Overall: There is a lot going on here. 84/100.  Maybe too much, but all in all this was a good time.

Beer Review, Magic Hat, Pale Ale

Appearance: The beautiful golden brown color of perfectly toasted bread. It’s dark orange tint and incredible clarity are quite appealing. The head, though a bit weak, has some staying power.

Smell: I get a lot of fruit. Peaches and something citrusy. I don’t get any of the traditional pale ale aromas though.

Taste: I get a faint hint of peaches, maybe some dried fruit. There is a nice aftertaste of hops, but I also get something off-putting that I can’t quite finger. It has a nice medium mouthfeel. All in all, it’s a very unique taste.

Overall: This was another weird one for me. Something about the taste was a bit off, but I still enjoyed this overall. I’m going to give it an 76/100, but that may be a bit too generous. I need a rating system that isn’t so arbitrary, but I love assigning points arbitrarily. What to do?

Beer Review, Pale Ale, Sierra Nevada

Appearance: Orange hued with a creamy, thick off-white head. It’s also a bit cloudy, but very slightly so.

Smell: Well pronounce hop aroma. Almost bitter even through the nose.

Taste: Not nearly as hoppy as I has assumed it would be. Well balanced, smooth, crisp, and refreshing. I get a slightly citrus note as soon as it hits the tongue. That goes into a very subtle hop taste which lingers.

Overall: This beer was not at all what I had expected. It’s flavors were a bit underwhelming, but they came together in a very enjoyable way. I feel like something is missing though. Still a great buy. 82/100.

Beer Review #21: Old Leghumper Robust Porter

Beer Reviews, Old Leghumper, Porter

Apperance: Beautifully dark, barely letting any light through. This is exactly what I am looking for in a porter. Up to the light there is slight color: a deep bloody red, maybe brown. The head is thick and creamy, mocha colored. This is a beautiful beginning.

Smell: Freshly roasted coffee, but very faint. The smell has those typical malty notes that one expects from porter, but I would have expected it to be more pronounced.

Taste: The mouth feel is phenomenal  The chocolate is undeniably here, possibly too much, but I quite like it.

Overall: This one has caused me a great deal of frustration. It’s a very good porter, but the chocolate is almost too much. That being said, this is a fantastic beer that I would highly recommend to any lover of porters or stouts. 85/100 feels right.

Beer Reviews, Yuengling

Appearance: I am getting it poured from a draft into a chilled pewter mug so I can’t really tell you too much, but the lacing is amazing.

Smell: Quite Malty. Maybe slightly nutty

Taste: Crisp, malty as predicted. No aftertaste. Pedestrian really.

Overall: This was not exceptional. However, it beats most American beer. I would have this poured from a draft over your typical American fare, but would never buy a bottle. 65/100.

Up Next: No idea.

Appearance: Hazy and a rich brown, caramel color. The head is off white with some staying power. I like what I see.

Smell: Fresh fruit immediately. Followed by a nice, sweet malt aroma. I am becoming tumescent.

Taste: Bananas, slightly bready and a delightfully malty aftertaste. The Dunkelseizen had a medium body that very pleasantly coats the tongue for a full flavor experience.

Overall: A thrilling beer. I have been snubbed by the Boston Beer Co. in the past, but this holds its own. 82/100. This is a beer that I see myself having many more times in the future. Give it a go.

Beer Review #19: Bell’s Hell Hath No Fury Ale [Guest Post]

Belgian Strong Dark Ale, Bell's Brewery

Hi there! I’m Ryan, from Columbus Food and Beer. I’ll be doing the beer reviewing tonight, but first I’d like to tell you a little about myself. Just don’t stalk me or try to kidnap me.

I’m a student at Ohio State majoring in Physics, and I’m in my mid-twenties. I drink a lot of beer, but not in the binge-drink I’m at a frat party kind-of-way. What I mean is that I drink a lot of different kinds of beer, because I love new experiences. I also love food, and eat a lot of it. Somehow, I’m not 500 lbs, but I think I’ll be someday.

I decided to start a blog about three of my passions: food, beer, and Columbus. It’s all about discovering what’s good in Columbus, and I make an effort to push for more. Now, I think these paragraphs fall into the “other nonsense” category of this blog. Time for the good stuff: the booze.

————————————

Bell’s Brewery‘s Hell Hath No Fury Ale

Belgian Strong Dark Ale – 7.7% ABV

Drink/avoid: DRINK

Hell Hath No Fury Ale

Appearance: Since this is a Belgian strong dark ale, I poured it into my tulip glass (yeah, I’m fancy). The first thing I notice is the huge, chocolate-colored head. It’s pretty impressive, and it recedes to form a nice frothy top on the beer. Here, take a look:

Aroma: As expected, it’s a dark beer. It has a great chocolaty aroma, with a lot of dark fruits in there too. Maybe some molasses? It’s also a little boozy, which is surprising for only 7.7%. Overall, this beer has a pretty mild nose.

Taste: Oh, man. This is a beautifully complex beer. I mean, seriously, this is good. Dark fruity flavors (plums, I think) accompany the roasted malts, which give a nice toasty flavor. It’s mildly sweet, and it’s a little spicy, too. Hops just make their presence known at the end, and vanish quickly. It has a very dry finish (wouldn’t be a Belgian without the dry finish!). The finish is also slightly chocolaty and a little spicy, and it lingers in the mouth for a little bit. Pretty creamy mouth feel.

Overall: I love it. It’s not what I anticipated at all, but I’m very pleased. It’s also not too heavy, so I could imagine hitting a few of these pretty quickly and getting dizzy. I’d give this beer an 85/100, with a few points deducted because it’s so expensive ($16 for a six-pack…what??). However, it’s worth the splurge, especially if you have a few friends to go in on it with you.

Now, I like to do a breakdown for points on my blog, so here’s how I’d do it:

Appearance: 3/3

Aroma: 2.5/4

Hop/malt balance: 3/4

Mouth feel: 2.5/3

Finish: 3/3

Overall: 3/3

Total: 17/20

For this posting I wanted to see if I could get the degenerates to be a little more creative so I gave them a blank canvas to work with. I received over 150 responses  but most were fairly tame. These are the ones that made me chuckle. This may be my favorite outing yet.

Also, I asked the respondents to place their candidate of choice for the upcoming presidential election in the title or their e-mail. The results: Of those that actually followed the instruction, 89 picked President Obama, 15 picked Mitt Romney, 7 were undecided, 2 picked Gary Johnson, 2 picked Bill Clinton, 1 guy picked John Kerry, and one man was writing in his own name. I guess Democrats are previer than Republicans. I would have assumed the opposite. (Though the Romney e-mails were the creepiest.)

Remember, if you like this blog do me a solid and share it.

Beer Review #18: Brooklyn Brewery Oktoberfest

Brooklyn Brewery, Märzen, Oktoberfest

Appearance: I’m thrilled with the thin, light chocolate mousse colored head. It has some staying power, a feature that I always appreciate. The Beer itself is copper colored and a tad bit cloudy. I haven’t even smelled it yet, but I am becoming tumescent.

Smell: Big, bold malt smell. If you have trouble identifying the smell or taste of malt in a beer then I highly recommend giving this a smell.

Taste: Rich and sweet. It has a great creaminess and the caramel notes leave a pleasant aftertaste. There is a slight bitterness near the end that serves as a perfect finish to this delightful Märzen-style lager.

Overall: I am quite fond of this. 83/100. It could maybe be a bit more balanced, but overall this beer is a huge success. It may enter the rotation soon. (I’ll have to list my top 6 sometime so that we actually know what the rotation is.) If you like a malty beer than you can’t do much better than Brooklyn Oktoberfest.
